Anne Thompson is an artist and curator.
Her studio-based projects in painting, drawing, collage, printmaking and artist books adapt and subvert linguistic structures and communication methods. Source materials include corporate logos; instructional symbols; newspaper graphics; modernist typography and color theory; and decorative patterns and alphabets.
Public-art interventions, as an artist and curator respectively, similarly explore how the meanings of signs and messages shift with social and political context. Examples include her artist project “Trail Signs,” which started as unsanctioned installations across Berkshire County, Mass., and concluded as a museum exhibition at the Clark Art Institute. Her curatorial I-70 Sign Show positioned the Missouri interstate as a site for cultural and political commentary.
She lives in Williamstown, Mass., and is visual arts faculty and director and curator of Usdan Gallery at Bennington College.
